World Flowers by Jane Packer

IN her ninth book reflecting her artistic skills, Jane Packer, now acknowledged as one of the world's most innovative florists, has created a whole host of special arrangements for the camera of Thomas Stewart whose atmospheric pictures also enjoy a global appeal.

World Flowers is rather more than an attractive book for the coffee table. Yes, the designs are truly awesome and a joy to see - but Jane goes deep into the reasons for them.

Using flowers and plants from 14 different countries Jane explains how she draws on the frisson, traditions and culture of each of them to create her distinctive displays.

An English country garden, a chic Parisian boutique, the colour of the Caribbean and the exotic surroundings of Morocco are among the inspirations.

Holland, where people spend more money on flowers than anywhere else, is reflected, naturally, by bulb flowers. The essential light heartedness of Australian life, the spirituality of Italy and the symbolism of China are also mirrored in this fascinating book.

Wild flowers have a particular fascination for Jane. Throughout her career she has always appreciated their reflection of the countryside - and that includes the weeds.

Says Jane: "On a grey February day opening a box of fragrant tuberose from a climate further south immediately transports me to another place. I want to demonstrate how this is a feeling we can all experience and enjoy."
