Blues get the point

THE Blues continued their revival with a well-earned point at current form team Oldham Town.

With a little more luck and better finishing they might well have taken all the points, as it was they had to settle for a share of the spoils thanks to a 90th minute penalty.

Winsford continued where they left off at Chadderton with fine flowing football in the first period of the match and they were close to taking a first minute lead when a scramble in the box saw a desperate home defender clear the ball off the line.

The Blues continued to press and they were rewarded in the 20th minute when Neil Harrison's shot took a wicked deflection that saw the ball loop over Oldham goalkeeper Gareth Jones and although the ball was cleared it was adjudged to have crossed the line.

The home side had to wait until the 30th minute for their first real attack on the Winsford goal and it was star man James Curley's shot that saw Barry Crellin tip the ball over the bar.

Ian Givin had a great chance to double the lead on 33 minutes when Mark Quinn's pass saw him through with just the goalkeeper to beat, but Jones came out to block his shot.

The second half saw Winsford kicking up the slope and against the wind but they still managed to go close on 48 minutes when converted left back Stuart Wellstead crossed the ball, but Quinn's flying header saw the ball go just wide of the far post.

Curley began to pose a serious threat and Oldham levelled the scores in the 52nd minute when he was sent down the right for his pinpoint cross to be swept home by Wesley Cathcart.

Seven minutes later the Blues went behind when a free kick on the right was headed home by giant defender Richard Graham.

Winsford continued to press and looked to have drawn level when Ian Wilkinson's long distance lob looked to be going over Jones, but the keeper just managed to get his fingertips to it and turn it round the post.

It looked as if Winsford were going home pointless but three minutes into injury time Ian Givin, with his back to the goal, and not posing any obvious threat was pushed over by Ryan Hewitt.

It was rush of blood that cost his team two points as Mark Quinn coolly stepped up to convert his eighth penalty of the season.

WINSFORD: Crellin, Wilkinson, Wellstead, Boldsworth, Turner, Hutchinson, Melia, Quinn, Givin, Whitehurst, Harrison (Winsor 80). Subs not used: Sweeney, Chambers. Attendance: 58. Star man: Stuart Wellstead.
