Duel, Duel

JEREMY CRADDOCK

PETE Waterman discovered the classical violin duo Duel when they were busking in St Anne's Square, Manchester.

He was drawn by the crowd of young women that had enveloped the pretty-boy duo.

Presumably the pound signs registered in Pete's head, buoyed by the pop-crossover success of Russell Watson and all-girl classical quartet Bond.

Now, Duel's first CD is out.

There are no surprises here. All the classical pieces are well known - the haunting Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens (the theme from Jonathan Creek), the Deer Hunter theme Cavatina, Morricone's Chi Mai and Sakamoto's Theme from Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence.

But it's clear the boys - Greg Scott (who comes from Warrington) and Craig Owen - are talented musicians. Meanwhile, Pete Waterman's pop influence is evident in the arrangements.

It's very easy listening, and if you're looking for an introduction to classical music, this is a good place to start.

I'm sure it will sell bucketloads among young female fans.
