Towpath all set for upgrade

A CANAL towpath that passes through Middlewich is to be given a £150,000 upgrade by British Waterways.

The 2km stretch of the path along the Shropshire Union Canal that will be affected by the project runs between Flea Lane and Hughes Bridge.

Largely funded by Cheshire County Council, the project aims to deliver improved access to a currently poorly used leisure resource.

Neil Rice, British Waterways engineer, says the scheme will improve walking facilities for local communities and boaters, including access for people with impaired mobility.

Mr Rice said: "We are actively upgrading access to our 2,000-mile waterway network across the UK so boaters and communities can enjoy the benefits of a vibrant water space running through their midst."

The completed project will promote links with local green spaces, surrounding residential areas and the town centre.

Mr Rice added: "Once work is under way, we will aim to maintain the momentum and extend the scheme to deliver substantial and lasting environmental benefits to the area."

Work is due to start early this month with the aim of completing the project in time for the summer.

Clr Dave Sutton, Middlewich county councillor, said: "As well as being a wonderful asset for the community, the town's waterways are central to its tourism sector and these improvements will play a major role in attracting more people to the area."
