Join David Bellamy for

a science spectacle

DAVID Bellamy will be heading to Northwich later this year as part of a science festival that will be launched next week.

Cheshire and Warrington Science Festival will burst into life for National Science Week, which runs from March 12, and will see a variety of activities taking place over a number of months.

Among the famous faces lined up for the festival is David Bellamy and he will be paying a visit to Mid Cheshire College's Hartford campus in June where he will take part in an outdoor demonstration of Down to Earth Science with local schoolchildren.

In March, TV vet Steve Leonard, BBC presenter Aubrey Manning and Nick Arnold, author of the Horrible Science books, will also be taking part in festival events, designed to raise awareness of Cheshire's scientific achievements.

Professor Graham Bonwick, who heads the science festival team, said the festival would be a celebration of the county's significant contribution to the scientific and technological expertise of the UK.

He said: "Industry, research institutes, education and training providers will all be involved in a range of activities to demonstrate how science contributes to society."

A detailed list of events is on the festival website www.cwsf.org.uk.

Design

One of the biggest events will involve schools across Cheshire in a bid to design and build an air-powered rocket from disused pop bottles.

There will be prizes and trophies on offer for the district, regional and overall winners and more than 400 primary schools and secondary schools across the county have been invited to take part.

The festival has been jointly sponsored by the North West Regional Development Agency and the Cheshire and Warrington Learning and Skills Council.
