Frying high

A CHEF is frying high after winning the north west semi final of a national competition.

Gareth Byron, aged 19, of Sandringham Estate, Lowton, is on the brink of competing in this year's Culinary Olympics, in Erfurt, Germany.

The competition brief asked second year Whitbread students to design a meal suitable for inclusion on a menu in Whitbread Restaurant brands.

The two dishes had to use chicken as the main ingredient, and put a twist on traditional favourites.

Gareth created a crispy oriental chicken starter served with Asian coleslaw, followed by oven-roasted chicken supreme with flageolet beans.

Gareth now competes in the national final at Crawley on April 7, hoping to win through to the Olympics in Germany.

He is one of Whitbread's 239 students at Liverpool Community College, while training for the other four at Stonecross Brewsters Fayre, Golborne.
