Police say public must play role

POLICE in Newton have said that they need the help of the public to identify anti-social youths who are making people's lives a misery.

Merseyside Police say they investigate and act upon all reports from the public about youth disorder and antisocial behaviour.

Sergeant Andy Newsham, from Newton Police Station, said: "We have already identified several areas where youths are causing annoyance and we maintain regular police patrols to help tackle the problem.

"We rely on the support of the public to identify offenders and to provide evidence that allows us to take action against them."

He added: "We were recently able to help the residents of Brookfield Street to tackle problems caused by youth disorder thanks to their willingness to provide statements and to identify offenders.

"As a result of this action, we were able to give extra attention to the area and arrested one youth for harassment. Several other youths in the town have also had Anti Social Behaviour Orders taken out against them and the problems of youth disorder in the vicinity have been drastically reduced."
