WITTON Albion lost ground on their promotion chasing rivals following this tame 1-1 draw at home to North Ferriby United.
Albion have been struggling in front of goal in recent weeks and this drought, which has seen them score just eight goals in their past seven games, continued on Saturday.
And they did themselves no favours by gifting the visitors an early goal.
Paul Farley floated a hopeful free kick into the Witton area which the defence should have dealt with.
But they were nowhere to be seen and it was Ferriby captain Paul Foot who got his head to the ball to steer it beyond Paul Gibson.
The early goal shocked Albion into action and they almost forced their way back into the game just two minutes later.
Gibson threw the ball out to Gary Furnival who threaded a pass through to Michael Yates.
Yates beat his marker and lobbed the ball over the keeper only to see it bounce back off the crossbar.
Witton did, eventually, get back into the game after 55 minutes when Mike Moseley was brought down in the box by keeper Paul Sharp.
Moseley stepped up to steer the ball home past Sharp who was only booked for what was, in essence, a professional foul.
Witton then had another claim for a penalty turned down when the ball clearly struck the arm of a defender and they should have sealed the game after 22 minutes when Moseley was clean through, but his effort flew wide of the far post.
The game then petered out and became a dull stalemate with neither side prepared to commit to attack to look for the winner
