Varkulis a wanted man

THREE tries in two impressive performances have prompted Rochdale Hornets to look into snapping up Warrington's Richard Varkulis for a longer term.

Varkulis, a centre or winger who topped the club's try scoring chart as an under 21s player last year, is currently on a one month's loan at Spotland.

A clause in the deal means Varkulis, on a one-year contract with Wolves, will not be able to play against Warrington in the Challenge Cup tie on Saturday.

Head coach Paul Cullen said: "I was at Rochdale on Sunday to see them play against Keighley Cougars and Richard looked very powerful, very strong and importantly is gaining game time.

"I'm fully aware that Rochdale wish to continue with Richard's services much into the season. But Richard needs to be afforded every access and every pathway to the Warrington first team.

"The initial month is nearly through and after that he can come back on a week's notice."

Former Leigh prop Varkulis scored two tries on his Hornets debut, which was a loss to Halifax, and touched down once in the home Arriva Trains Cup defeat of Keighley.
