Money matters

SO the council tax increase is to be only 4.9 per cent.

There are two words that explain this news - election and year.

We are not told, except in vague terms, where the savings have come from, but could these not have been made last year when we were hit with that massive increase?

There are many questions to be answered, like how much will be spent on paid-for foreign trips, how much will the Halton Show cost, why will Halton pay £150,000 a year, at the very top of the scale, for the new chief executive?

And why is so much spent for so little benefit, as with the horrendous paving in front of the old Town Hall in Widnes?

The problem, of course, is that Halton ratepayers are getting what they deserve.

Many will not vote at all in the local elections and the majority will vote in the same councillors who have helped to get us in this mess.

A new ruling party could hardly do worse.
