Don't be sick about computer viruses

BUSINESSES in mid Cheshire are being warned to remain on their guard as a new threat from hackers to business IT was revealed by software giants Microsoft.

Businessman John Hulme, chairman of Plumley-based training company the JPD Group Ltd, said he had invested heavily in firewalls and virus protection systems to ensure his business could face any new IT threat.

And he advised other businesses to follow suit if they did not want to face the nightmare of seeing their IT systems crash.

Mr Hulme was speaking following the announcement by Microsoft that it is investigating how part of its Windows operating system source code had found its way onto the Internet.

Microsoft spokesman Tom Pilla said it was not known how the chunks of Windows 2000 and NT code had leaked out.

He said: "We are currently investigating these postings and are working with the appropriate law enforcement authorities."

Mr Hulme said: "This is another threat to businesses that are still reeling from the effects of the MyDoom virus which swept this region in recent weeks.

"With every week we hear of new attacks from hackers and for businesses these attacks and viruses are more than just a headache.

"A virus can cause havoc in any business.

"Just imagine losing your database of suppliers in one fell swoop.

"Or even worse your customer database.

"That is why we put so much emphasis on protecting our in-house IT system from all outside attacks.

"In addition to having an effective firewall, all our staff are made aware of the importance of keeping our IT system clear of viruses so everybody is constantly on alert.

"It is a discipline that I would strongly urge other businesses to take on board."
