NEIGHBOURS fear their children's safety is at risk because back gardens of a housing estate are constantly flooding during torrential spells of rain.
About ten gardens of houses in Leach Lane, Sutton Leach, were three foot under water during last recent deluges. Some parents say they have to keep their youngsters locked inside the homes because of worries the water could cause a death trap.
They are demanding action is taken to tackle the cause of the flooding. Mother-of-two, Tracey Hart, is among those whose gardens have flooded. She reckons the floods are caused by derelict land behind the gardens.
The 33-year-old said: "The council say the land is owned by someone else and is not their responsibility. The fields are full of old rubble so there's no drainage."
"We have to lock the door because we are worried the kids could go out - five minutes out there and they could end up dead."
Nearby the wasteland are two World War II air raid shelters. Neighbours say the structures house rats and fear the rodents will be roaming round their "swamp-like" gardens.
Tracey, who lives with husband, Clive, and their two children Ryan (seven) and Liam (six) added: "It can take up to three for the waters to be shifted. Nobody will take responsibility."
