Derelict flats being demolished at last

DERELICT apartment blocks in Dallam are finally being razed to the ground - and it is hoped that their destruction will pave the way for regeneration.

The dilapidated apartments, off Longshaw Street and Harrison Square, have been a blot on the landscape for years.

And many people in the area have been hoping that the flats could be torn down to make way for a more modern development.

Last year ward councillors discussed the option of demolition with Warrington Borough Council's housing department, and residents were consulted.

It was decided that a new start was needed, and bulldozers arrived on the site last week.

Mick Hill, Labour ward councillor for Dallam, said: "We have had lots of problems with those flats and to bring them up to scratch would have cost a lot of money. A decision was made to take them down because nobody wanted to live in them, to be honest."

He said that problems with youth disorder meant that Warrington Borough Council found it very difficult to let the flats.

The design of the flats made them a haven for gangs of youths and, as a result, elderly people did not want to be housed there by the borough council.

It was thought that it would be better to knock them down rather than leave them lying empty.

Clr Hill added: "They are quite a landmark and they have been a primary feature for years. It's a shame in a way but a lot of people have said for years that they should be knocked down. It's sad but I think you have got to be realistic and look to the future."

The borough council currently has no plans for the land, but it is thought that a housing project would be favoured.

It is expected that the demolition will continue into March.
