Colts race to win

Widnes Colts 43 Southport 22

WIDNES took a fixture against an open age side, Southport, and proved after a difficult first half to have the edge in pace and fitness.

The first period saw Whitfield leading the charge and Barrett crossing twice without reply.

Just when Widnes thought they could relax the experience of the Southport side saw them take the initiative and Widnes had a game on their hands.

The second period saw Glover weave some magic and score from halfway which he converted.

Chambers and Lochnane refused to back down against the bigger pack and Wild with McCann in support saw Widnes start to pull away.

McGreevey from full back showed his pace to score and with Elwell making breaks it was only a matter of time before further tries came.

Critchley pounced to put Widnes out of reach and with O'Neill's introduction adding some pace to the backs that was what happened.

Goulden went close and prompting from Swaine saw McGreevey cross again before the Southport side scored a consolation try.

As the game drew to a close Stafford had a good run followed by Brick going close and Duffy taking play up but when Widnes looked to be going close to increasing the lead the referee decided to call time.
