Cancer answers via e-mail

CANCER patients looking for advice and support can now get it at the touch of a button from Halton Hospital.

The McMillan centre at the hospital now has a dedicated email address for sufferers and their relatives.

Determined that the support service reaches as many people as possible, Bev Collins, information centre manager, set up the address Bev.Collins@nch.nhs.uk

She said: "We have a raft of up-to-date material but very few men access it.

"Research shows they are far more likely to seek support and information via e-mail than coming in to see us directly or telephoning the centre.

"As with any calls we receive, all inquiries which come in by e-mail will be responded to within 48 hours."

The McMillan information and support service at the Delamere Centre in the hospital is filled with up-to-date material in a number of formats including written, audio, video and the Internet.

"It is open to anyone who is affected by or concerned about cancer, including patients, carers, friends and relatives," said Bev.

The centre was opened in August 2001.

It provides a relaxed and comfortable environment where people can discuss their concerns, get individual help and support and access to complimentary therapies.

It also provides home support visits by arrangement.
