DETECTIVES from Warrington have gone to Cumbria to see if a dead body belongs to missing teenager Shafelia Ahmed.
The grim discovery was made by a passer-by, on February 4, who came across the decomposed remains on the banks of the River Kent, at Sedgewick, near Kendal.
Although the body has not been identified, speculation is growing that the body could belong to missing Sankey teenager Shafelia Ahmed.
A nationwide appeal has been launched and hundreds of names on missing persons' descriptions are being checked.
A spokesman for Cumbria Police said that a post mortem examination had proved inconclusive and further tests were being carried out.
It is believed that the woman, aged between 17 and 23, may have been dead for some time. Underwater divers have been searching the dark waters of the River Kent for clues.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed that officers from Warrington had visited Cumbria but added that it was routine procedure.
Investigators in Cumbria say the body could have been underwater and become dislodged from its resting place by rising waters.
The body belongs to a young woman, 5ft 2 ins tall and slim. She was wearing long white or cream trousers, a grey khaki Jodie Jo T-shirt and a grey woollen cardigan.
Police also found a white size 3 stiletto shoe and items of jewellery including a gold bracelet and a blue Topaz ring.
