Shop made me feel like a thief

AFTER buying my newspaper from Martin's newsagent at the top of Bridge Street for the past 18 months I am appalled at the way I was treated last Thursday lunchtime.

I paid for two items costing 88pence, handed over a £10 note but was only given £4.12 in change.

Despite not even reaching the door and checking my change as I turned round, I was told that I would have to wait to have the till roll checked before they would give me my £5.

That policy is not what I am annoyed about. I don't expect shopkeepers to hand out £5 notes on the spot, to everyone who queries their change, but a bit of understanding shouldn't be too much to ask.

I was treated like a thief, told that as I had left the shop - which I definitely hadn't - I'd lost any right to the money and I would have to wait until all the customers had been served before the till could be cashed up.

There was a queue of about half a dozen people, who all heard how rude the shop assistant was and one of the assistants even chatted on the phone while I waited for my money.

Then the assistant disappeared into the back and I had to wait a further 10 minutes before my £5 was thrust into my hand, with the woman mumbling something about being sorry for the wait, but there was no apology for her rudeness or for the way in which she embarrassed me.

It's obvious that some polite customer service training wouldn't go amiss before they lose any more business.

ANNOYED, Great Sankey
