All we are doing is trying to slow down the traffic

BEING an old git in a yellow jacket and carrying a radar gun, I would like to reply to Andrew Francis's letter. (Guardian January 29).

All we are doing is trying to slow down the traffic in the areas where we live.

There are yellow signs on the roads with the words 'Community Speed Watch'. We also have yellow jackets and we work in pairs.

You can see us long before our gun sees you. If you are caught speeding it will be logged. You will not be fined or incur penalty points on your licence. You will receive a letter from the police informing you of the speed, time, place and date.

I personally recorded a vehicle travelling at 50 mph in your area (Thelwall New Road), during school hours.

Imagine a little boy or girl growing up in the magic land of make believe, oblivious of the dangers surrounding them, stepping out into the road and that vehicle trying to stop. He can't, he is going too fast.

How long do you think it would take the parents to get over that tragedy? It is true, the pain will get less over the years, but every birthday and every Christmas it will tear their hearts out and it will go on until the day they die.

Also the driver, wishing he could turn the clock back, waking up in a cold sweat reliving those few moments that changed his life. He also will live with that till he dies.

It is true, we do not win every battle, and we can take the insults, but by God we will try to win the war.
