A rapid response

THERE'S been rapid response to a plea from a sporty old-timer for any recorded details about his brief wartime spell as a Saints player. Joe Dewsnip, now a spry 83-year-old living in Manchester had asked if any roll of honour of past players existed, including his name.

He'd also wondered if any of his old contemporaries were still alive (no feedback on that point yet).

Joe's plea was directed to this page (February 5) by Eddy Grundy from Moss Bank after a chance meeting in Tenerife. "He reminisced about his youth and apparently played for Saints during the early 1940s", explained Eddy.

A Saints diehard (wishing to be anonymous) keyed into the Saints Heritage Society website. Winger Joe's listed there as having played three times. He made his debut against Batley on February 12 1944, notching a try in the 13-8 victory. His next two appearances were not quite so joyous. Saints lost 21-5 to Wakefield Trinity followed by a 43-7 Challenge Cup thrashing by Dewsbury on March 11 - giving Joe a Knowsley Road career span of exactly one-month!

COULD the reason have been to do with war service? I'd love to know.
