Historic mission is open once more after three year project

COMMUNITY groups in Woolston returned home to The Mission building on Warren Lane last week following an extensive refurbishment project.

Helen Jones, MP for Warrington North officially opened the building as representatives from companies that helped with the project and user groups looked on.

The MP became involved with the renovation and refurbishment project in October 2000 and has supported the scheme ever since.

Three years ago, the future looked bleak for the 130-year-old building amid fears that unless urgent work was carried out, it would become unfit for use.

But after receiving two awards totalling £10,000 from the Landfill Tax Credit scheme, which together with monies that were raised locally, the much-needed work was able to get under way.

Now that the work is finished, the hall has been completely refurbished to a high standard with an access ramp and disabled toilet added.

Mrs Jones said: "I was delighted to be asked to open The Mission. It is great to see the plans come to fruition. The building has had a rich history and now it is refurbished people can look forward to seeing it host community activities for many years to come.

"I said three years ago that it was a tremendous asset to Woolston which must not be lost. As a result of the dedication and hard work of all those involved in the renovation and refurbishment project it will not be lost and our congratulations and appreciation should go out to everyone associated with preserving this building."
