North West Counties Quarter Final

HORNETS progressed to the semis with another outstanding performance.

In a closely fought first half, Hornets took an early lead following a scrum.

O'Brien took on the home defence before sending out a pass to Shaun Gledhill who scored in the corner.

Both teams then used a good kicking game to gain advantage in the heavy conditions.

But it was Ashton who took the upper hand with a score right on half time, the conversion giving them a 6-4 interval lead.

The second half saw Hornets step up a gear and following good forward play Andrew Stevens took on the home defence to crash over in the corner. Jamie Hurstfield converted.

Hornets continued to use a tactical kicking game and used their better attacking to increase their lead.

Liam Hulme drove over following good handling along the line.

Hurstfield converted to give the away side a 10-point cushion.

The Widnes side crossed the whitewash on two other occasions only to have the scores ruled out before Ashton struck late on to score a consolation try leaving Hornets with a 10-16 victory.

Hornets will now be looking to go one step further in the North West Counties competition to reach a second final having already booked a Lancashire cup final date at Robins Park on February 29.
