HALTON'S mayor led a group of walkers in Victoria Park as part of a new scheme to help people ease back into gentle exercise.
Cllr Ron Hignett and 15 people of all ages turned up to brave the cold wind and rain on the day and were provided with free umbrellas for their efforts.
Walking brings many benefits and the scheme, organised by Halton Council's sports development team, aims to address mental as well as physical health and to help reduce illnesses like heart disease and high blood pressure.
Apart from improved health, 'Walking Your Way to Health' is a series of organised walks, which offer security within a group, the chance to socialise and make new friends and a real appreciation of some of Halton's beautiful parks and countryside.
These short walks target everyone - especially people who are in poor health - they are open to all, including older people and even mums and tots can come along.
Regular walks take place each Monday from 12.30pm in Victoria Park, Widnes and from Runcorn Town Hall from 12.30pm each Wednesday.
More walks are planned for March and it is hoped that 10 walks will take place each week by summer.
