St Rocco's in the swim after Marj's efforts

GOING that extra mile certainly wasn't a problem for a Padgate woman who took to the water all to raise funds for St Rocco's Hospice.

Marj Lawless, of Delery Drive, went all out to boost the hospice funds by doing a sponsored swimathon of 50 lengths, collecting sponsors among friends and family.

And so far Marj has collected £940 from the sporting challenge which took place at Total Fitness.

But there's still more cash to add to the pot as husband Gordon prepares for a charity quiz night at St Oswald's Club on Padgate Lane on February 27.

Proceeds from that event should take the total over £1,000 if the quiz is well supported.

Marje, former hospice volunteer, and Gordon organise a charity event for St Rocco's each year and have raised thousands over the years to help the hospice.

Modest Marje said: "It wasn't much of a struggle. I swim pretty regularly so I didn't need any training or anything like that.

"Every year we make sure we both do something to help raise cash for the hospice so that it continues with the wonderful work it does and care it gives.

"No-one knows whether one day they might need the support and care of the hospice and that's why it's so important to give."

Mike Bloomfield, from the hospice appeals department, said: "Marjorie and Gordon have been brilliant to us. Marjorie was excellent as a volunteer working with the patients and she could always be relied upon.

"They are both great assets to the hospice and have worked so hard organising charity events and evenings over the years and we are extremely grateful to them for their continued support."

l The charity quiz night will be held on Friday, February 27 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £2 on the door with all proceeds going to St Rocco's Hospice.
