TWO quick thinking young girls who saved their diabetic granddad after he collapsed on a frozen woodland path, have been hailed as little heroes since their heartwarming tale appeared on the front page of The St Helens Star.
Chocolate giants Cadbury even sent the plucky pair a bumper supply of their very own Heroes when we rang to tell them of the girls' actions.
Emily Canning (nine) and eight-year-old Beth Miller had been out walking with their granddad James Lawrenson, in Sankey Valley, when he started to feel dizzy.
With nothing sugary to keep the symptoms at bay he collapsed before they could reach his home on Paisley Avenue.
As he started slipping into a diabetic coma, the girls showed remarkable composure for their tender years.
They knew he needed sugar to bring him around, so while Beth comforted her granddad, talking to him to keep him awake, Emily sprinted back to his house.
She unlocked the door, found a piece of chocolate and then phoned her older sister Amy who called for an ambulance.
Emily raced back to the woods and within minutes of her putting the chocolate in his mouth, he began to come around and has since made a full recovery.
All three girls' efforts have been praised across the town. At their school, Blackbrook St Mary's, they received special acknowledgement.
Head teacher Katherine Ashton was especially proud of her plucky pupils.
Exceptional
She said: "The were awarded the Good Citizenship award in front of the whole assembly. It is a trophy that pupils keep for a term after they have done something exceptional for someone or the community."
"We decided that they deserved it. The staff were very impressed with what they did and the whole school is very proud of them."
Word spread to chocolate makers Cadbury who were made aware of the girls' lifesaving achievement and sent them a stack of chocolate goodies, including Cadbury's Heroes naturally, to show their admiration.
They said: "It's great to hear that our chocolate could come in so useful. When we say 'a little bit of what you fancy does you good', we never thought it would do this much good!"
"Well done to Emily, Beth and Amy for such quick thinking. We'd like to show our appreciation of their efforts with a chocolaty gift for them to share with family and friends."
