Revving up for a return

NORTHWICH looks set to become the focus of international attention as the Thundersprint Festival prepares to return to the town.

The festival, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 9, centres on a programme of classic motorcycle races, although a host of music, dance, street entertainment and trade stands will ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Thundersprint 2003 proved to be a phenomenal success when thousands of spectators descended on the town centre to witness the spectacle.

However, organisers are promising that the 2004 event will have even more to offer fans with a full international line up of competitors.

Jim Redman, six times world champion and TT winner, raced in the event last year and is looking forward to returning.

He said: "I just love coming to Northwich. It's such a friendly town and the fans are so enthusiastic.

"The Thundersprint is just like a grand prix from my heyday and there's nothing better than being able to get really close to the people who have given me so much over the last 50 years."

He will be joined by a bevy of international talent including Swiss star Georges Chatelain and eight times Spanish champion 'Pepin' San Millan.

Ken Hutchison, editor in chief of MotorcycleUSA.com, America's biggest biking website, will also be taking part.

He said: "It's the splendour of the event which has caught my imagination. It seems impossible to have such a huge event in small town that no-one has ever heard of.

"I've seen the pictures of Northwich and it looks so English. I have never visited England but it's just like I imagine an English town to be.

"I also feel privileged to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the famous riders who are entered in the Thundersprint. I wasn't even born when these guys were at their best but it will be like stepping back in history to be with them."
