'HOW COULD HE JUST VANISH?'

THE niece of an elderly man with dementia who has been missing for more than a week has spoken out about his 'devastating disappearance'.

Holly Porrino, who cares for 76-year-old Peter Jones, pictured, made an impassioned plea for information as police continued to search the Great Sankey area.

She said: "I am having real difficulty understanding how such a well-known man can just apparently disappear into thin air with no trace.

"It's a terrifying indictment of our society that this has happened and we should all be fearful.

"I cannot believe this has happened to my family, and I am devastated at his disappearance."

Mr Jones, of Hood Lane, was last seen at his home on Thursday, January 22, at around 4.30pm.

Police were searching Sankey Valley Park on Friday, as flyers appealing for information were distributed in the area.

People are being urged to keep their eyes open for Mr Jones, and Hood Manor residents are asked to check any outbuildings in the grounds of their homes in case he has taken shelter inside.

If he does not take medication for his condition he may become confused, and could return to places he associates with, such as Bewsey and Dallam, where his family farmed for more than 50 years.

Mr Jones is 5ft 2in tall, with grey hair and is of a skinny build but with broad shoulders.

He was wearing a knee length blue anorak, grey sweatshirt, brown corduroy trousers, grey shoes and a brown tweed flat cap, and walks with his hands behind his back and with small steps, giving the appearance of someone shuffling along.

Anyone wanting to report a sighting should call Warrington police on 652222.
