Witton draw

WITTON lined up against a Congleton side boasting three former Witton players including manager Kevin Langley and keeper Mat Conkie.

But neither side could conjure up a victory and book their place in the Cheshire Senior Cup final where they will face Woodley Sports, conquerors of Stalybridge Celtic.

For long periods Congleton threatened the Witton goal and even took the lead after 15 minutes.

A low cross from Scott Williams was parried by Paul Gibson as far as Michael Scully.

Scully lobbed a ball into the area and a poor defensive header from Simon Hughes was met by Danny Worthington who made no mistake from close range.

Witton were back in the game just five minutes later when Mike Moseley collected a Danny Salt pass, ran wide and fired in a cross that defender Adrian Reilly could only force past Conkie in his own goal.

Witton then took control of the game but couldn't make their superior possession pay with both Darrell Dicken and Simon Hughes firing wide from long range.

As the second half got underway in increasingly poor conditions, with the snow beginning to fall, the floodlights failed causing a 25-minute break in the proceedings.

And once play resumed it was an end-to-end affair with both sides looking to sneak a winner, but not wanting to commit too much to attack.

Witton went close through Moseley and Dicken, but it was Andy Barlow on 70 minutes who went closest, dragging a flicked shot just wide of the upright.

At the other end, a minute later, Scully went one better, actually hitting the post, but the rebound fell safely to Gibson who was able to clear the danger.

The game played out to a stake finish leaving both sides facing the prospect of a replay at Congleton on Tuesday, February 3, which will be played to a finish, including extra time and penalties if necessary.
