Vandewalle homes in on Great Britain youth squad

SARAH Vandewalle has excelled in Great Britain selection trials at Bath University and she is now provisionally ranked the sixth best 17 to 18-year-old pentathlon performer in the country.

The 16-year-old Westbrook all rounder was competing in her first 17 to 18-year-old competition in Bath. She finished second in the swimming event and third in the running section but had to settle for sixth spot overall after struggling against the country's elite in the pistol shooting and fencing disciplines.

A host of medal hopes for this year's Athens Olympics took part in the event, which was the first of two GB selection trials. Sarah was pleased with her performance in Bath and she is confident of an even better showing in the second trial at the university on February 14 and 15.

She knows that a place in the GB youth squad is within reach.
