Cannabis is still illegal warns drug squad

DRUG teams in Halton are stressing cannabis is still illegal after the change in the law.

The Government has reduced cannabis from a Class B to a Class C drug.

But Cheshire Police say it is still illegal to possess cannabis.

It is now up to an individual officer's discretion whether he or she makes an arrest or not.

Steve Eastwood, co-ordinator of Halton's Drug Action Team, said: "We would like to ensure that people are clear about the new classification of cannabis.

"The drug remains illegal and if you are under 18 and are caught with cannabis in your possession, you will be arrested."

The action team is supporting the Government's £1m campaign to make sure people understand the new law, which takes effect from January 29.

An independent expert committee that advises the Government on drug classifications recommended the change.

Arrests

The discretion to arrest remains with police officers and the guidance issued to local officers suggests that arrests may be appropriate if people smoke cannabis in a public place.

And young people under 18 will, in practice, be arrested and dealt with at a police station even for possessing small amounts for personal use.

Cultivation of cannabis remains illegal.
