Pele's goal - to pull in punters

BRAZILIAN football star Pele is back in Warrington almost 40 years after he trained in the town during the 1966 World Cup.

That's because a statue of the soccer legend has been unveiled in the reception of the Northwest Development Agency's Warrington base.

The lifesize waxwork model is on loan from the National Football Museum, in Preston, and its spell in Warrington is aimed at promoting the museum by tapping into the high number of people who visit the NWDA headquarters.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA, said: "The National Football Museum is an excellent asset for the north west and I am pleased we are able to promote it in this unique way.

"I am sure Pele will prove an inspiring welcome to staff and visitors to our headquarters during the coming weeks."

Pele and the Brazil squad stayed in Lymm during the 1966 World Cup when Pele scored the first goal of the tournament, at Everton's ground, Goodison Park.
