Pilks Recs' ground is 'under review'

PILKINGTON has stated that a review of the land it owns at City Road and Cowley Hill is currently taking place, but insists there are no plans at present for any kind of development.

The glass giants made their statement after the Star learned of rumours in amateur rugby league circles that a recreation site on City Road - which has been home to the Pilkington Recs for more than 100 years - could be sold to developers.

Surveyors have been seen at the land recently, which includes the Windle City Social Club. Pilkington also has spare land at its Cowley Hill site.

A spokesman for the glass giants said: "Pilkington is currently reviewing the whole of its Cowley Hill/City Road factory site and as part of that we are also assessing the immediate and surrounding areas also owned by Pilkingtons and samples are currently being taken from the ground.

"At this stage there are no plans for development. If and when there are, there will be full discussions with all parties involved in the usual way. Ruskin Leisure was consulted regarding the samples being taken from the recreation site."
