We need to get tough on drink-drivers, says Simpson

A WARRINGTON Euro MP has warned that drink-drivers should face stiffer penalties in view of the latest figures.

Brian Simpson (pictured, right), Labour MEP for Cheshire and spokesman on transport for the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, said on Friday that he was "disappointed" with the drink-driving figures for the county, which show an increase in the proportion of positive, refused or failed breath tests.

"Perhaps we are fast approaching the time when Parliament should consider harsher sentences for drink-driving offences," Mr Simpson warned.

Mr Simpson said that drink-driving was a persistent problem which needed to be highlighted at all times.

"Most people know how dangerous it is to drink and drive, but sadly there are still a small number of drivers who risk their own and other people's lives by refusing to act sensibly," he said.

"This is not just an issue for Christmas and New Year - people need to be aware of the risks and dangers throughout the year."
