Sixth form student is the wizard of Oz

A 17-YEAR OLD student from Widnes & Runcorn Sixth Form College starred for England U17s rugby league series win over their Australian counterparts.

Ian Hardman, currently on a two-year professional contract at super league giants St Helen's, featured in the test series win over the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in December.

Speaking about the achievement, Ian said: "I was delighted to get the call-up and even happier to secure our series win over our fiercest rivals Australia.

"I'd like to thank all my coaches and staff at the club and college for their support.

Career

"I am enjoying my time at college but I would like to pursue a career in rugby professionally and playing in matches like these are the ideal preparation."

Both tests against AIS were close matches.

The first test, played at south Leeds stadium on December 5, was won 28-22.

Five days later, the series was secured with a 40-34 victory at Featherstone.

Studying A level PE, history and leisure & recreation, Ian is in his second year at Widnes & Runcorn Sixth Form College after attending Bankfield School in Widnes.

College sports lecturer, Sarah Brady, added her congratulations

She said: "Ian is an exceptional talent and works very hard at his rugby - he deserves this success and we hope to see more of him on the international stage soon."
