Tarporley scores well

TARPORLEY High School scored well above the county and national averages in the GCSE tables released last week.

Pupils managed to beat the Cheshire average of 59 per cent of 15-year-old pupils achieving five or more GCSEs at A* to C grades, with 71 per cent of Tarporley pupils achieving that level.

This means there has been a 10 per cent increase in the amount of youngsters achieving five or more GCSEs at A* to C since 2000, when 61 per cent of Tarporley pupils managed this.

Another remarkable statistic was that no pupils at the school left in 2003 without any GCSE or GNVQ qualifications - the Cheshire average for this was still four per cent.

School Standards Minister David Miliband said last week that he welcomed the progress being made in GCSE/GNVQ results across the country.

He added: "The GCSE and GNVQ results show that we are making steady upward progress in the numbers gaining five or more passes at grades A* to C."

David Rowlands, Cheshire County Council's education executive, said: "It's very pleasing to know that Cheshire has maintained its place among the country's top education authorities.

"We are making good progress in terms of our own Education Development Plan and will make every effort to protect and improve standards so important to our parents."
