Bridge work to go into 2005

WORK on the troubled Kingsway Bridge in Latchford is set to continue into 2005 after a car crash left it with structural problems almost a year ago.

As a result of the crash in February 2003, the bridge suffered significant damage to the stone parapets on its west side. Temporary concrete barriers were installed to protect road users, and metal security fencing was set up to protect pedestrians.

Phil Johnson, the borough council's assistant director of transportation and environmental design services, said: "A scheme is being prepared to permanently repair the damaged stone parapets and work should start in late spring 2004. Structural maintenance will also be carried out at the same time.

"In addition, new steel crash barriers will be installed on approaches to the bridge.

"Permanent repairs to the parapet have been delayed to enable the work to be carried out at the same time as the larger structural maintenance project, scheduled for the 2004/5 financial year, therefore minimising disruption for road users and pedestrians."
