Leigh RUFC 1st XV 10
Widnes RUFC 1st XV 9
THE Wids dropped to third in the league after this defeat by Leigh.
On 14 minutes Mark Field was sin-binned for his second illegal act then two minutes later Simon Alderson followed him for a high tackle.
Leigh took full advantage scoring two tries in five minutes through Liku and winger Irwin.
Widnes pulled back to within four points before half time with two Stu Hussey penalties.
Widnes dominated the second half, Leigh only once got into the Wids half and scuffed a penalty attempt.
On 59 minutes Hussey reduced the arrears to one point with his third penalty.
The Wids had several chances to score tries in the second half but wrong decisions, dropped passes or good defence by the home side denied them. Paul O'Connor, Tommy Ledson and Dave Welsh all had near misses.
The referee blew up early in the second half with three minutes plus stoppage time left, which did not help the Widnes cause.
Widnes have a blank week this week but the following Saturday play second placed Bowden at Heath Road, kick-off 2.15pm.
