Cancer patient's gift to hospital

A CANCER victim is so grateful to a surgeon for saving his life, he asked wedding guests to donate money instead of buying a gift.

Bert Cooper, 70, who married Phyllis, 78, last October, presented £530 to Halton Hospital consultant Mark Tighe.

"I owe my life to Mr Tighe and the staff at Halton Hospital," said Bert, of Victoria Road, Runcorn.

"Guests responded magnificently to my request. I'm thrilled that this money will be used to help others."

Bert was diagnosed with bowel cancer last May and underwent surgery within days.

Fabulous

"I have recuperated well and am now 95 per cent fit," said Bert. "I was in terrible pain before.

"The nurses were fabulous, they treated me like a lord."

Mr Tighe, consultant general and colorectal surgeon, said: "It is always very pleasing to hear from former patients who are delighted with the care they have received.

"On behalf of everyone on ward B3, I am pleased to accept this extremely kind donation from Bert and Phyllis.

"We will be purchasing a reclining chair to make patients stay more comfortable."
