The future's in safe hands with Warrington Youth Orchestra

Two members of Warrington Youth Orchestra are set for stardom. Michael Siddell has joined rock group Hope of the States, who have had a top ten hit.

And Greg Barwick, (stage name Greg Scott), is a member of the violin duo Duel who have been signed by Pete Waterman. They will release their first CD in February.

The orchestra has also been enjoying success as a group after presenting their much acclaimed Christmas concert, which was attended by the Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Pauline Nelson and her consort, David Spencer.

All three orchestras performed at the concert at the Parr Hall.

The second orchestra, conducted by Nigel Jay, opened the event with youth overture by Emma Lou Diemer. They played several other pieces including a magical selection from Harry Potter with Helen Clinton singled out for her oboe solo.

The third orchestra conducted by Phil Robinson played pieces composed by Hayden and Mozart. They concluded with two Christmas pieces - Glory Shone Around and Let the Rock Roll Out for Christmas - both composed by Jock Mackenzie

After the interval, the first orchestra played a range of pieces including a selection from The Merry Widow (Lehar) and part of the Pier Gynt Suite (Grieg).

All three orchestras performed at the carol concert on December 20 at Bridgewater High School, before an audience of almost 200! Many of the members took the opportunity to wear fancy dress which everyone enjoyed.

The orchestra is now preparing for its next venture - the exchange visit to Hilden in October 2004 following the very successful exchange with Hilden Music School in October 2002.

There are a number of instruments available for rental at a nominal charge (bassoons, oboes, cellos and horns) for youngsters who wish to try them out while lessons for beginners in woodwind, brass and strings can also be arranged

The orchestra also has a limited number of vacancies particularly for string players.
