Gleghorn praises Dabbers spirt

NANTWICH Town player boss Nigel Gleghorn hailed his side's effort after losing out 1-0 in the big derby at Congleton.

Desperately unlucky to leave Booth Street empty handed, the Dabbers found home keeper Matt Conkie in inspired form as save after save kept them at bay, last Saturday.

The Bears claimed all three points thanks to Danny Worthington's eighth minute winner and their number one who got to work soon after, denying both Gleghorn and Danny Griggs in the first-half.

Electric after the break, only two more excellent saves denied Griggs as Nantwich poured forward with Gleghorn's wicked free-kick also thwarted.

Hopes of an equaliser rested on top scorer Wes Wilkinson late on but Conkie was there again to see Congleton through to a vital victory in the NWC Division One promotion race.

"I'm chuffed to bits with our attitude and even at 1-0 down so early, we responded and played very well," said the boss.

"It's a shame that we couldn't finish them off though and that we met Conkie in such inspired form.

"That's us though, we've took only one point out of 12 now but the performances have been good.

"It's come to the time now where we'd rather play badly and pick up a result."

And it'll be tough to do that in their next outing as league leaders Mossley FC visit Jackson Avenue on Saturday.

Their charge at the top of NWC Division One has been impressive and Jason Beckford recently picked up the manager-of-the-month award for December, winning all six fixtures, staring with that 2-1 home victory over the Dabbers.

Down in 13th now, the Dabbers are a massive 32 points behind the leaders.

"It's a good one for us," added Gleghorn.

"They beat us 2-1 there and for the first half an hour, they battered us.

"But for the last hour we played very well and definitely deserved something.

"I've said it before but on our day we can beat anyone in this league."

Simon Pay will replace Nantwich's number one Stuart Heaps on Saturday after the keeper suffered a break against Congleton.
