New Year - same frustration

CREWE FC's hopes of starting the New Year in style were thwarted by yet another postponement.

Looking for their second successive league victory, last Saturday's home game against Golborne Sports fell foul of the weather.

That means Crewe have played just twice in almost two months and after climbing Mid Cheshire League Division One with a 2-1 win at Styal, they're back in the bottom five as other results went against them.

Frustrating times for Ian O'Reilly and his squad.

"It means we've played just twice in nearly two months which is poor for us," he admitted.

"But the pitch was a mess and if the game could have gone ahead we would have probably ruined it for the rest of the season."

O'Reilly used the blank Saturday to check on the Reserves progress who impressed despite losing out 3-2 at Golborne.

Trailing 3-0 at the break, first team top scorer Dave Hanson kept his impressive goal ratio going with a second-half double.

"They were unfortunate not to come away with a result," said O'Reilly,

"We asked them if they needed anyone and they said they needed a striker.

"Dave needed a run out because of all the postponements so they took him along.

"Andrew Dibbens did well and for a 16-year-old, that was pleasing.

"We also had another look at the keeper and Danny Reid looks like a good prospect."

Desperate to get their league programme going again, fingers crossed they've got the opportunity at Cheadle on Saturday.

Second from bottom and six points adrift, Cheadle have won only once this season and O'Reilly wants a result.

"We've gone a bit stale because of the break and we really need a game," he explained.

"We've had a fully fit squad available for the last couple and they're raring to go. We need a game.

"We need to get our season going again and hopefully we can get a result at Cheadle.

"They've been struggling but we'll treat them with respect."
