Teenagers faced CS Gas attack

TEENAGER revellers celebrating the start of the New Year in Nantwich's Market Square were sprayed in the face with CS gas.

Six 14-year-old girls were targeted by the yobs just after midnight as they congregated in the square to bring in the New Year.

Police have released two men on bail following the incident and are now appealing for witnesses to the attack.

Detectives believe other partygoers may have suffered similar attacks and are urging them to come forward.

PC Shane Smith said: "Just after the midnight celebrations at 12.10pm, a number of youths with CS gas sprayed it into six young girls' faces.

"In one incident a girl was approached by a young lad who asked her for a New Year's Day kiss and when she said "no", his friend sprayed her in the face."

"The girls were given first aid at the scene and are fine now.

"The gas used is a bit stronger than what the police use but it doesn't give any lasting effects and we have now sent the gas off for testing.

"Having seen a video of the incident it looks like there were at least 100 people around the tree in the square so plenty of people will have seen it happen.

"Another two people reported being attacked on Friday so we don't know how many have been targeted in total, but anyone who has seen anything or has been affected by the incident should come forward and speak to us immediately.

"There will be an identity parade eventually so the more witnesses that come forward the better."

CS gas sets in a crystal form and causes a slight burning affect, reddening the skin.

Anyone with any information should contact Shane Smith or Shaun Green at Crewe police station on 500222 or confidentially at Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
