Free trees on offer

MORE than 1,200 trees were handed out for free by Vale Royal Borough Council during National Free Tree Week.

Every household in Vale Royal was eligible to claim up to three trees from special events held across the borough.

And demand this year is said to have been phenomenal, with each event's allocation of trees being claimed within minutes.

The aim of the council's free tree scheme is to encourage residents to contribute to the replanting and regeneration of the Mersey Forest.

So far, more than 500 hectares of new community woodland have been established in Vale Royal - an increase of 26 per cent in the borough's woodland cover.

This year the council has given away shrubs and bushes including Baddleia, Snowy Mespilus, Silver Birch and Bird Cherry.

These native trees and shrubs were complemented by other varieties, which will encourage wildlife and birds to visit gardens.

Clr Mark Stocks, lead councillor for the environment, said: "The dramatic growth of the Mersey Forest over the past few years is testament to the success of this council's free tree scheme.

"I am delighted the council is continuing to support this successful campaign and making Vale Royal a beautiful and green place to work, play and visit."
