Chris wings in for cup success

ENERGETIC air cadet Chris McShane is flying high after scoring success in a major football tournament.

Chris, 14, of 306 (Runcorn) Squadron was the only cadet selected from 1,400 cadets in Merseyside Wing to represent the Wales and West region.

"We played three games and got into the final," said Chris, a pupil at St Chad's, who plays in midfield.

They were beaten 5-4 on penalties in the final, against Central and East region.

"I was happy we got that far," said Chris, who scored four goals. "We didn't win, but we deserved to."

Chris, who hopes to become a pilot, received three coveted awards - his wing blue, region blue and leading goal scorer of the tournament.

Swimming, netball, rugby, athletics and hockey are just some of the team activities offered to air cadets as part of a competitive sports programme.

Youngsters aged 13-17 also have the chance to go flying, gliding, rock climbing and abseiling, plus tackling challenging aviation exams. If you've got a spirit of adventure and would like to join, call into 306 (Runcorn) Squadron, Highland Road, Runcorn on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 7.30pm-9.30pm.
