St Maries fail to keep Keepers out

Wigan Keepers 13

Widnes St Maries 12

DESPITE a superb display from the Saints they failed to spoil the league leaders 100 per cent home record.

Wigan's man of the match, Eddisbury scored two early tries.

After 28 minutes John Lepts and Mark Birmingham carved the home defence open for the first of many Maries attacks.

Lepts eventually kicked through but his touchdown was denied by a disputed dead ball decision.

The outstanding Greg Lawrenson then put Lepts through for his customary try.

With the Maries building wave after wave of attacks and Neil Higgins, Matty Grady and Terry Owens outstanding, the Keepers resorted to spoiling tactics, which resulted in a string of sin binnings and eventually three men being sent off.

Shortly after half time Eddisbury converted a penalty and Baker dropped a goal but it was still all about the Maries in attack. They got their reward when Ryan Quinn was first to seize onto a kick through from Jay Brown to touchdown.

With Craig Yates converting two out of two the game was there for the taking.

Matty Grady was punching holes in the home defence that were setting the platform for a win with Tony Hannon and Gary Hughes both going close.

A further Wigan misdemeanour gave the Maries a penalty 20 metres out with only four minutes to go but the attempt sailed narrowly wide.

The Maries have their chance of revenge with the reverse fixture due on Saturday next, kick-off 2pm.
