Tigers outsmart Lions

Eccleston Lions 6

Widnes Tigers 16

THE Tigers started well and looked the most likely to score first.

However, a deep ball on the sixth tackle caught the Tigers wingman and full back in two minds and the Eccleston kicker collected and scored. The conversion was unsuccessful.

The Tigers were soon back on the offensive through forwards Duggan, Holland and Abbott. This soon led to the Tigers being awarded a penalty in front of the posts.

The kick was a formality for Slavin at that range and the Tigers secured their first points.

Almost immediately the Tigers indiscipline gave Eccleston a penalty and the St Helens side increased the lead.

That was to be Eccleston's last score and the remainder of the game went Tiger's way, starting with a fine try from scrum half Connor, converted by Slavin. At the break the Tigers had made it 6-8.

The second half began with a well deserved try from Tiger's young stand off Mike Barr and with Slavin substituted in the half time break it was captain Connor who added the extra two points.

The Tigers final score came from another penalty kick from Connor with 30 minutes left.

Although the remainder of the match saw no further scores, it developed into a closely fought tackling game.

The Tigers used all their substitutions to good effect, bringing on a combination of youth and experience in the form of Donnelly and Keowski. The next Tigers game, on Saturday, January 10, sees top of the table Higginshaw at Prescot Road.
