Pet owners - be vigilant

PDSA saw nearly 2,500 cases of animals that had swallowed inanimate objects in 2003.

With this in mind, vets from Britain's leading veterinary charity are advising pet owners to be even more vigilant after the festive season - as some of the most familiar foreign bodies retrieved from animals are Christmas decorations.

Other commonly swallowed objects are rubber balls and the elastic string of mesh around joints of meat, which often requires surgery to remove.
