Mum's girlhood

THE flashback photo, featuring third-year pupils of the former Cowley girls' grammar school (November 27) brought memories rushing back.

It was submitted by retired teacher Dorothy Hunter, now living in Trefonen, near Oswestry, who couldn't recall the full identities of several of her 27 classmates from 1951. But now, up steps Alan Higham ("an exiled Scouser") to confirm that one of the girls was his mother, Valerie Higham (nee O'Donnell). She, in turn, believes that another unidentified classmate was Shirley Hayes who may have emigrated to the USA. "My mum lives in Prescot and although retired does sterling work at Willowbrook Hospice", says Alan.

GREAT to hear it! There can be no finer cause.
