Top of the world

CHRIS Houghton was grateful for one thing 18,000 ft up at Everest base camp - at least the weather wasn't too bad.

Keen climber Chris, 37, who owns the newsagents on Church Road in Rainford, attempted the feat to raise money for Ambleside and Langdale Mountain Rescue, the busiest team in the UK, dealing with more than 100 incidents.

Returning home recently, Chris has raised £1,000 so far and is looking to add to the appeal.

"I tend to do a lot of climbing and walking and the mountain rescue team get little in the way of funding. They are all volunteers who help those who get into difficulties on the mountains."

It took Chris and his companions about ten days to reach base camp and five to come back down due to acclimatisation at such high altitudes.
