SAINTS' pre-season training is being lapped-up with particular relish by veteran packman Chris Joynt, who has returned with a real spring in his step for what could be his final season as a player.
And having had a proper close-season rest for the first time in ten seasons, with no international commitments to occupy his autumn, Joynt is raring to go and aims to finish on a high - even though there could be a twist.
Although he is entering into the final year of his contract and has recently passed a further grade on the coaching scheme, Joynt has not ruled out carrying on at the end of next season but only if he is still able to match his high standards.
Joynt said: "I want to give it my best shot this season - and although it is supposed to be my final year, I will be keeping my options open. If I have a good season and I am still fit enough, you never know. But having played 12 seasons here I am a Saint and cannot see myself playing anywhere else."
With Tim Jonkers, Mike Bennett, John Stankevitch and Lee Gilmour also vying for spots in the second row next term, there is sure to be severe competition for places come the start of Super League IX.
But that is a challenge Joynt is relishing.
"It should keep us all on our toes, and that suits me personally because I don't want to drop my standards. I want to go out on a high note - the last thing I want people to say is 'he carried on a season too long'," he said.
After a disappointing trophyless season last term, the whole team are knuckling down to some serious training, particularly on the fitness front as well as getting to grips with some grappling techniques on the wrestling mat to assist with post-tackle situations.
"Pre-season training is going really well. This is the longest pre-season we have had and it is great to come back and feel so fresh. It has certainly been back to basics on the training methods with a lot of cross-country running. We have been getting a bit of a flogging on that score.
"We are quite focussed on what we want to achieve. The short term goal has to be the Challenge Cup because we missed out this season with that late semi-final defeat.
"That is our first hurdle - and the Millennium Stadium is one of those big venues I have yet to play on."
A testimonial game for Joynt is still to be arranged before the season starts.
Meanwhile Saints have again arranged a friendly match with Barrow on January 11 (ko 2pm).
Saints are also hoping to get RFL approval to stage a friendly against Salford on Friday, February 6.
