  • Help from young is reassuring

I USUALLY enjoy my early morning swim in the town centre baths but with my car being repaired last Thursday, I visited Great Sankey Baths by cycle. I have attended there in the past but my friend and I tend to visit the town baths once a week as she lives closer to these particular baths. read more

  • Cruelty to squirrels may be good for business but it's not justified

YESTERDAY in Parliament a member of the opposition eloquently suggested that Warfarin was the only effective means of killing the grey squirrel. Later a minister added that shooting was not effective and visualised the noble lords opposite, all approaching the woods with shotguns suggesting the squirrel would die from a heart attack at the sight. Laughter from the lords followed. However I was disappointed to hear one noble lord suggest it was ridiculous to need the permission of Europe to apply this method. Jesus said "Not a sparrow falls to the ground without your heavenly Father knowing" and the noble lords are not so important that they shouldn't consider the extremely cruel method of poison they wish to apply to the grey squirrel and must, in this day and age, have a more humane alternative to those who have a vested interest in the matter. read more

  • Town needed the Carlton Club

I HEARD that the Carlton Club would be shutting down and to be honest I was not that bothered at first. I have been going for eight years and thought, "at least I will save some money" but the old saying is true, "you don't realize what you have 'till it's gone." So true. read more

  • Police kindness that doesn't make news

THERE has been a lot of bad publicity recently regarding various police forces around the country. Police officers have been accused of inefficiency, corruption and lack of concern. I am sure there are occasions when this is true and that publicity is one of the tools which can be used to ensure that the police perform their duties in all respects to the standard expected by everyone. However, there are, I am sure, many occasions when individual police officers are deserving of our thanks and, indeed, some good publicity. read more

  • I was gagged at council meeting

ON Thursday, January 28, I attended a Borough Council Housing meeting, intending to speak against the proposed payment of water charges as part of rent of council housing, considering this non-choice method of payment to be an infringement of my civil rights. Earlier that day I had been told by the chairman, Mrs Alice Froggatt, that I would be allowed to address the meeting. Then, just before the meeting she told me the Labour group had rescinded the chairman's permission - thereby gagging me. read more
